Re: Camel metal panels

I'm new to this group, but I overheard the conversation about the panels on
the Camel. In Windsock Datafile 26, Sopwith Camel, inside front cover
caption for opposite page states ". . . with mottled natural-metal engine
cowling and panels. No guns are fitted, their place being filled by a neat
aluminum fairing; . . " It looks to me that this fairing and the mentioned
cowl and panels are the same material. Also, on page 205 of Sopwith, The Man
And His Aircraft, a Harleyford publication, there are some detailed plans
which call out that all the panels just behind the cowling are "aluminum
panels". Also still, on the set of plans released with Aeroplane Monthly
magazine March, 1973 there is mention of ". . aluminum firewall. .".
None of this is first hand knowledge, but it gave me an excuse to prowl my
library. Mike
